Dr Duff was an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Tufts university in Boston. He is an active faculty member in charge of surgical training and training courses focused on the spine and spinal column at EANS (European Association of Neurosurgical Societies), AO Spine, Eurospine and the international EUCMISS group, specializing in training for “minimally invasive” spine surgery. He holds a US patent in neurosurgical robotics.
His main clinical interests are complex reconstruction of the cervical spine and craniovertebral junction, image guided intra & extradural spinal surgery, & minimally invasive surgery of the spine. He also has extensive experience with revision spine surgery. Dr. Duff is a fervent supporter of the advancement of these robotic techniques, which on the one hand help reduce surgical morbidity, and on the other, enable so-called complex surgeries to be performed on advanced age groups.
John Michael Duff is an American Board Certified Neurosurgeon (AANS). In addition, he holds European Board Certification in Neurosurgery and FMH equivalence in Neurosurgery in Switzerland, recognized at federal level. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS).

My first contact with Dr. Duff in October 2020, followed an appointment set up for me by my GP, for pain in my kidneys and from the MRI, Dr. Duff detected a Schwannoma compressing the spinal cord.
At the beginning of 2021, I had acute neural pain in my back that prevented me from moving or even sleeping, and my legs began to feel paralysed, making it very difficult for me to walk.
After three months of unbearable neuronal pain, I was admitted to the HUG and despite multiple examinations and treatments, I left after two weeks with no improvement and no solution to relieve my pain.
As soon as I got home, I contacted Dr. Duff, who set up an emergency appointment for me the same day.
He immediately made the connection with my tumour on D10 and an MRI within the hour confirmed that the tumour had evolved in an abnormal way and was the cause of my pain.
Dr. Duff clearly explained the situation to me, he offered to operate on me the next day, a Saturday, at 1ʳᵉ o’clock, in order to remove the tumor.
I was admitted to the Clinique de Genolier the same day and operated on the following morning.
As soon as I woke up from the operation, I felt no more neural pain, and almost a year later I had regained almost all my motor skills.
I’m extremely grateful for the way Dr. Duff handled the situation, his availability, responsiveness and speed in organizing and carrying out this operation.
Dr. Duff and his assistant, Ms. Demierre, were able to take charge of me very quickly when I was suffering from a herniated disc. The welcome was very professional and I benefited from personalized care that took into account my level of pain and disability.
Dr. Duff made it very clear to me what my options were during the interview, he was very attentive and listened to me and answered all my questions.
Finally, the operation went very well, no doubt thanks to Dr. Duff’s skills, and I then benefited from a perfectly adequate follow-up.
I’m now fully recovered and I’d like to thank Dr. Duff, Mrs. Demierre and the whole team who took care of me. Excellence and competence are the order of the day.
I was suffering from serious cervical problems, which led to major surgery on several vertebrae. I first consulted a colleague of Professor Duff’s, who frightened me so much that I waited a year before consulting again.
Professor Duff took a completely different approach.
Calm and serene, he explained the different stages of the procedure in simple words, without frightening me.
The operation went really well, and that evening I was able to eat and walk as if I hadn’t undergone 5 hours and 30 minutes of surgery.
The Genolier clinic did the rest. 3 days later I was home, pain-free and stress-free.
Thank you Professor Duff!
Thanks to Professor Duff’s expertise, my dad has regained full mobility, which is exceptional for his age. Today, at 91, he walks for 1/2 hour every day, and cycles in his apartment.
Needless to say, the success of this operation boosted his morale. In short, this operation was a renaissance.
Our gratitude goes to Professor Duff and his team, not forgetting his medical secretary, Madame Demierre, whose availability and empathy deserve special mention.
I would like to give my testimony following the operation my father underwent. In January 2022, following an X-ray of the spine, it is detected that the 5th lumbar vertebra is fractured, as a result of cancerous lymphoma.
We were quickly put in touch with Dr. Duff.
On our first visit to Dr. Duff, my dad was in a wheelchair.
His pain was unbearable. Dr. Duff took charge of my dad and very quickly explained to us the solution he had to reduce the pain and, above all, enable him to continue living normally and walk again.
The operation was quickly scheduled and, thanks to Mme Demierre, all the necessary arrangements were made for her to be taken care of at the Genolier clinic.
The operation took place on February 24, 2022 and was a great success.
My dad’s got an Eiffel Tower on his back! His back was literally blocked, but the pain subsided relatively quickly. Mobility has slowly returned.
Perhaps we should mention his age, 84.
We’d like to thank Dr. Duff and his assistant Mrs. Demierre, without whom we wouldn’t know where my dad would be.
Their hard work, availability and friendliness at all times helped us get through this ordeal.
Dr Duff performed surgery on my lumbar spine in February 2023 because I was in constant pain.
Dr Duff explained the operation to me in detail beforehand.
This clear explanation and the calm and extremely competent manner gave me complete confidence in Dr Duff.
After the operation, which went perfectly (no more pain after a week), Dr Duff came to see me every day, even at weekends, and did a personal follow-up.
Dr Duff is without question a proven specialist in spine surgery and also a passionate doctor who takes a very personal interest in his patients.
Overall, I can only speak highly of Dr Duff as a doctor and a person.
I can highly recommend Dr Duff.
